Dns is used to resolve host name to IP address & vice versa. The Dns is present in NT, 2000, 2003 and 2008 operating systems In NT Dns is integrated with web services. In 2000 and 2003 Dns is integrated with active directory services. Dns uses FQDNS [fully qualified domain naming system or structure].
FQDNS= SYSTEM NAME+DOMAIN NAME.
Dns is for identifying host on internet or public network & in private network. Its a method of identifying host instead of IP Address. Its a mechanism for storing & maintaining a list of names an IP address of hosts.
Requirements for Dns: 2003 os cd, require static ip primary dns suffix and port no 53.
Zone: Its a sub tree of dns database. It contains mapping information with help of forward and reverse lookup zone.
Forward lookup zone: Which contains hostname to IP address mapping. It contains host records(A).
Reverse lookup zone: Which contains IP to hostname mapping. It contains pointer(ptr).
Stub zone: Its a substitute zone which contains server glue records only dns server records.
Recursive Query: The query passed into local dns server for resolving the query if not resolved then the dns server on behalf of the client forwarded to another dns server until it gets resolved.
Interactive Query: If the query raised by the client to local Dns server is failed, it sends a negative reply to client instead of forwarding to another dns.
Primary zone: Its a read write copy created on dns server.
secondary zone: Its a read only copy created on dns server.
zone transfer: Its used to transfer zone records from primary dns server to secondary dns server.
AD integrated zone: Its useful when we want to maintain the zone information in active directory zone. If we save the records in AD when we take the system backup we can get the dns server backup too.
Trouble shooting: If you are not able to get records from dns server to secondary dns server.
1. Check the prefered dns IP on secondary dns server.
2. Check the zone transfer tab is having secondary dns server ip on primary dns server.
3. Restart dns services.
Backup of primary dns server: We need to take two registry files in hkey local system/system/controlset001/services/dns and \hkey local machine\softwares\microsoftwindowsNT\current version\dns server and the dns server folder in system32 for backup.
